No Reason Why Not

"Loneliness adds beauty to life. It puts a special burn on sunsets and makes night air smell better."
--Henry Rollins

I hitchhiked from Taos to a hostel in the mountains of New Mexico many years ago. I had arrived there by Greyhound, but Taos was where the line ended. The lady at the Gas & Sip said it was safe there, so I went to the dusty corner of the intersection, stuck my thumb in the air & tried to look like I'd done it before. There didn't seem to be any good reason why not to try, at least. Standing outside under the big desert sky felt good. My thumb felt strange though, naively looking around like that, wondering what might happen next. I got a ride half-way pretty quickly and then one more, and made it to the hostel in Arroyo Seco without ending up in a stranger's trunk. Please don't tell my mother. One guy was a little weird, but in a good, quirky way. Neither of them asked me any questions and neither would take money. At the hostel though, I wandered into the communal kitchen to make tea and felt more alone than I had on the road. I didn't really want to get to know people I'd never see again. Small talk felt exhausting. I fed the hostel horses some carrots, went for a long walk, and sequestered myself in my little one-bunk cabin after the sun went down. One of the people I'd met in the kitchen was a new age hippie with hair sprouting from her legs and long, red braids. Said she was writing a book about the magical vortexes of Hawaii. I pulled out a flashlight and a book, wondered if she was still in there talking instead of writing, and made a lifelong friend with the peace of a silent night.

Night is the friend. The book was "Sometimes a Great Notion," Ken Kesey.
